Toronto, Canada (January 11, 2007)—

In a recent article published in the journal Molecules (2006, 11, 925-928), author Gernot A. Eller (Department of Drug Synthesis, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Vienna) compared three 'state-of-the-art' nomenclature software tools, including Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc.'s, (ACD/Labs') ACD/Name 9.0, concluding that ACD/Name was the best option available for computerized systematic nomenclature.

The study uses a sampling of over 300 structures, taken from recently published journals, manually entered into each of the three software packages in order to evaluate their ability to generate acceptable (i.e., unambiguous) names as compared to manual nomenclature, and the quality of the unambiguous names generated. Under each criterion, ACD/Name showed significantly better results than the competitors, ChemDraw 10.0 (CambridgeSoft), and AutoNom 2000 (MDL), generating unambiguous names for 99% of structures tested, with 98% deemed to be 'preferred names'. In fact, in his article, the author states '...the quality of names that are generated from ACD/Name is second to none...'

A further study was conducted using only ACD/Name to examine its ability to generate names according to CAS nomenclature rules—neither of the other packages include this capability. The study concluded that the identical CAS names were generated by ACD/Name for 88% of the structures tested, while in the remaining 12%, about half of the names generated differed only slightly from the CAS name.

The study also provides a detailed comparison of the functional classes of molecules supported by each package. Once again, ACD/Name proved best with its ability to handle more complex structures, including those with fused ring systems, polymers, and some biochemicals—all capabilities lacking in the competitors offerings. The author also acknowledges that while version 10.0 of ACD/Name has since been released, the changes affect only complex functionality and that '...the basics seem to be absolutely mastered.'
