Frequently Asked Questions |
| |
| Q: |
How fast are the Batch calculations? |
| A: |
The calculation speed of ACD/Labs Batch software is affected by many computer-dependant factors, the most important being: the version of the operating system, the CPU speed, and the amount of RAM. In addition to the computer specifications, the performance will be affected by the complexity of the structures and the type of the calculated property.
The table below contains data on ACD/Labs' 6.0 Batch software run on two Win XP systems. While one may expect a faster performance on SGI and Sun Solaris, the table provides a base indication of the calculation speed for a number of properties and can serve as a reference.
The test dataset contains 10,000 structures from the National Cancer Institute Research Resources open NCI database, used without any prior editing. The structures cover a wide variety of contemporary organic compound classes.

| Q: |
Our spectra are recorded on a UNIX machine
but we would like to use your PC-based
software to process them. Help! |
| A: |
Basically, data recorded on UNIX systems can be made accessible to Windows® Networks using SMB (Server Message Block) protocol through programs such as Samba. Click here to find out more about Samba.

| Q: |
What are the minimum system requirements for ACD/Labs software? |
| A: |
In order to successfully install and run the ACD/Labs desktop software, you need the following:
Operating System:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional with SP4 or above
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional with SP2 or above
- Microsoft Windows Vista
Hardware:
- Recommended requirements of the operating system used (please refer to the manufacture for these specifications) plus
- 256 MB RAM
- 1 GB local disk space for installation and log files
- Processor requirements will vary by application and use. Disk space requirements for user data files will vary by application and use.
Moreover, for Network Installations, the server hosting the program files can be any type of file server with the following requirements:
- The file server must be visible through the network via Windows Explorer;
- The folder with the ACD/Labs package should be located on the mapped drive (the drive with the client);
- The bandwidth between the server and the clients must be at least 10 Mbit/s;
- The installation directory on the file server must be writable by the user performing the client installation at this time. After installation, permissions may be set to read-only.
Note If you have purchased an ACD/Labs package with the ACD/License Server application, you need to allot a separate NT-based server for installation of ACD/License Server.

| Q: |
I am very interested in your software but my entire lab is set up with Macintosh computers. Do you have ACD/Labs software compatible with Apple systems? |
| A: |
Native Mac OS applications are not available for Apple Macintosh computers from ACD/Labs. Support for these implementations remains outside the scope of our Maintenance agreement; however, we will unofficially support all of these implementations as best we can. Note that full testing of the software on the platforms listed below has not been done. However, ACD/labs is interested in supporting the Apple Computer user community.
All options for running ACD/Labs software require an installation of Windows in a native or virtualized environment. The available options depend mainly on the age of the hardware that you now own. Newer Intel®-based Macs have more options available to them.
1. The most robust method that we have tested is the Apple BootCamp software for Intel-based Macs. This will require a reboot, and a registered copy of Windows XP Professional or Vista Business.

2. Parallels Desktop for Mac offers ACD/labs software compatibility for Intel-based Mac computers. Since is it a virtualization tool, Parallels Desktop allows users to open ACD/Labs software alongside their current Mac OS applications.

3. Microsoft Virtual PC allows users that do not have older models of Macintosh computers to take advantage of Virtualization (also called emulation) technologies.

All users are invited to contact Technical Support for the latest information regarding Apple Macintosh and ACD/Labs software compatibility.
Users have been successful in using ACD/1D and 2D NMR Processor on Macintosh computers through virtual systems running Windows. Read reviews by two such users. |
| Q: |
Will ACD/Labs software run on computers with AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon, or similar 64-bit processors? |
| A: |
In general, 32-bit software should be able to run on these systems. If the hardware vendors provide you with 64-bit drivers for your system, you can install a 64-bit OS and run 32-bit and 64-bit applications on the same OS.
At the present time we have not tested any ACD/Labs software on 64-bit platforms. We have not compiled our applications for 64-bit platforms, so problems may exist that prevent our 32-bit applications from running in this environment. |
| Q: |
Is ACD/Labs software compatible with Windows Vista? |
| A: |
Version 11 of our desktop software has been fully tested on Microsoft® Windows® Vista®.
Previous versions of ACD/Labs desktop software have not been tested with, or are supported under, Microsoft Windows Vista.
For users who are committed to Windows Vista there are alternative methods you may consider:
- Connect to another computer running a compatible operating system via Remote Desktop/Terminal Services hosting ACD/Labs software.
- Hosting a compatible operating system with a "virtualization" product, such as Microsoft Virtual PC, VMware, or Parallels.
