Learning to Name

With a greater variety of compounds now synthesized, it has become increasingly important to teach students to designate substances appropriately from step one. ACD/Labs naming software will help your students learn, revise, and drill in accepted naming standards.

Even if you are not a professional educator, we are sure that you have often wished you could quickly name a compound for publication, or double-check a couple of the rules you might feel a little rusty on... "how does that numbering scheme for anthracene go, anyway?"

In fact, you might have even stronger feelings about naming chemical compounds. To quote directly from an enthusiastic ACD/Name user:

"Any nomenclature (IUPAC and CAS) for complex compounds is very difficult and demands much time for naming "by hands". We don't multiply 12345 by 4567 on our fingers. Why, then, do we need to generate names for molecules with more than 100 atoms in them manually?"

Whether your interest is in terms of teaching or maximizing efficiency, we think you will be amazed with the ease and performance of ACD/Name.
Not only do these programs give the systematic IUPAC or Index name for a compound - you can also summon a hyperlinked table of explanations for how the portions of the name were derived, along with automatic IUPAC rules Look-up Tables.
The IUPAC Help files are full of educational examples, which are linked appropriately.
ACD/Labs naming products implement a range of IUPAC and CAS Index nomenclature methods and support thousands of functional groups. ACD/Name can handle E/Z and R/S isomerism along with other special stereodescriptors.
Our naming software allows naming of fundamental biochemical structures such as steroids, carbohydrates, and amino acids - a feature that is of great interest for the biochemical community, judging from the number of received requests.
