In recent years, a number of computer software programs promising systematic naming capabilities have been delivered to the marketplace. Foremost among these are ACD/Labs' IUPAC and Index Name software packages, which offer systematic naming according to either IUPAC rules or CAS Index rules. Our professional naming products place an emphasis on naming important and complex structures correctly. To be in accordance with the IUPAC recommendations, we participate directly in the work of the IUPAC Commission on Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry.

As you explore the market, you will find other naming products such as ChemInnovation and Beilstein AutoNom, both of which are also integrated with CambridgeSoft ChemDraw. But investigate carefully... a recent comparison of our software capabilities with both AutoNom and Nomenclator shows that GREAT CAUTION must be taken when implementing systematic naming. It is truly a matter of dollars vs. sense, since even though some of these packages are fairly inexpensive, their performance is significantly lacking.

In version 9 release of our software, we have added a new product to our nomenclature suite, ACD/Name Chemist Version. This affordable software does not offer the versatility of the ACD/Name with regard to Index naming or customization of nomenclature rules, but is an accurate and reliable nomenclature tool that satisfies the needs of the general chemical community for quality IUPAC naming. Be assured: the same industry-standard IUPAC nomenclature algorithms are used to power nomenclature generation in ACD/Name Chemist Version as in our expert product - ACD/Name.
