Defining and Implementing a Data Workflow for an Analytical Laboratory

Ryan Sasaki

Abstract

In an analytical laboratory, different people with different functions participate in the creation and interpretation of many different types of analytical data, making it extremely difficult for anybody to get a complete overview. Further, many organizations are struggling with heterogeneous software information systems which impede the flow of information. This makes it extremely difficult to manage the R&D process to achieve desired goals in a coordinated fashion and avoid duplications, downstream delays, or wasted resources.

This talk will focus on the ACD/Labs analytical data management system (ADMS). The first step in this system is to address the inefficiencies created by using different instrument and file system formats to store and process data. ADMS not only allows data from different software systems to connect, but it also offers access to industry-leading processing capabilities within a single interface that is complementary to individual instrument-software algorithms, in one processing interface. The next level is to organize all the processed information; this involves the ability to store and easily retrieve processed NMR data with associated sample information and with other complementary MS, IR, or chromatographic measurement results on the same sample. Finally, easy dissemination of the information across the organization for faster and better decision making is facilitated. Here, powerful visualization modes, query tools, and graphing tools help provide overall or narrow perspectives to analysts and decision makers as needed.
